Feeling kind of down…

Two things are ruining my much deserved weekend of rest, so i will spit them out now and stop thinking about them.

Number one: my ex Indian boyfriend just wrote me asking me for money to help him pay for the wedding of his sister. Too bad I know very well he only has one sister who’s been married for years already. Really, he and a few other friends there had always treated me like a person instead of a tourist and had never asked me for money. And really if it was for a real wedding i wouldn’t mind him asking, like he would to his other friends. But lying like this means he doesn’t respect me anymore. This makes me sad. I dont wanna go back to visit them anymore :(

Number two: I keep on thinking about those two girls I really wanted to be friends with and who sort of kindly, subtly rejected me. Last month it was girl1’s birthday and she went out for dinner with girl2 and some other people we had met together. Not only i wasn’t invited but i didnt even know it was her birthday at all. She’s nice and normal to me and all, it’s not like she hates me. But she’s never reciprocated my invitations to do something together. I was really convinced we had clicked. This makes me sad too.

Neil Gaiman on Copyright Piracy and the Web

“Places where I was being pirated […] I was selling more and more books. People were discovering me through being pirated. And then they were going out and buying the real books”

“Nobody who would’ve bought your book is not buying it because they can find it for free. What you’re actually doing is advertising, you’re reaching more people, you’re raising awareness.”

Have I said how much I love him?

Neil Gaiman is a better person than. Period.

My first introduction to Neil Gaiman was through a housemate lending me Anansi Boys. If it wasn’t for that free copy I may not have discovered his work for years longer if at all.

Since then I’ve bought numerous copies of his novels and graphic novels both for myself and as presents for friends.

This is what people misunderstand about online piracy. You’re not losing sales. It’s not a physical thing that can only be owned by one person. You’re enabling people to discover you work, people who may otherwise never have found you. This is free advertising, social advertising, and it is GOLD.

These are the people who will become your fans, your evangelists, who will help to sell your work to their friends and their friends’ friends. They will buy attend conventions, signings and gigs, buy merchandise and create their own.

“Online piracy” of this sort isn’t about stealing work, it’s about sharing it.

Here’s a tip for the do-it-yourself crowd:
Go to your computer’s Start menu, and either go to
“run” or just search for “cmd.”
Open it up, and type in “ping [website address],”

Once you have the IP for a website, all you really
need to do is enter it like you would
a normal URL nd hit enter/press go. Typing in
 “208.85.240.231”
should bring you to the front page of AO3,
for example, just as typing “174.121.194.34/dashboard”
should bring you straight to your Tumblr dashboard.
Since we’re obviously bracing for the worst case scenario
which would involve you not being
able to access the internet regularly, you should,
 save this list.

Dear Tumblr-ers, -ites, ettes, and whatever other things you may prefer,

Please reblog the crap out of this. Add to it if you feel there is stuff necessary but missing.

P.S. Thank you to the lovely who wrote this up.
